Can An EIN Number Be Cancelled?

If you completed an EIN application for a business or entity in the United States and was issued an EIN number, that EIN number belongs to the business or entity for its entire lifetime. The EIN number cannot be cancelled and the IRS will not reassign the same EIN number to another legal entity.

Even if you registered a new company and had an FEIN number assigned to the business entity, but never actually got the business off the ground, the FEIN number will still not be cancelled. The business entity can use the same FEIN number at a later date if necessary. However, you are able to close the business account (even though you cannot cancel the FEIN number) by mailing a letter to:

Internal Revenue Service
Cincinnati, OH
USA 45999

In the letter, state the reason why you wish to close the business account, and include the full legal name of the business or entity, the EIN number, and the business or entity's mailing address. It would also be best to include a copy of the EIN notice which was mailed to you at the time you applied for an EIN number.

Make sure that you have filed any final tax return(s) and paid any outstanding federal taxes on behalf of the business or entity before you close the business account.
